Mark Jones Meet the Galacticos

Mark Jones, Salesforce Consultant – Meet the Galacticos

Continuing in our series in which you get to meet and learn more about the Cloud Galacticos team, say ‘hello’ to Mark Jones, one of our new Salesforce Consultants. I caught up with Mark to ask him a few questions.

Mark Jones, Salesforce Consultant

Hi Mark Jones, can you give us a bit of background about yourself and your work history?

Sure, I began my career training up as an Office Administrator, I then moved into printing for a local school for a while before moving back into Admin and eventually into the Salesforce workspace in 2016 getting my start in the Nonprofit sector. I’ve also spent time as a youth worker and an events organiser, planning music events for a variety of youth programmes in the North East of England.

What’s your story behind joining the Cloud Galacticos team?

Mark Jones Cloud GalacticosIt’s one of those stories where it kind of just happened.

I was interested in moving on from my previous role, so I reached out to Supermums as a recruiter. They organised a few interviews for me, one of them being with Cloud Galacticos.

I met with Paul and Neel for an interview and as they say the rest is history. I started a couple of months after that interview.

What is your role as a Salesforce Consultant at Cloud Galacticos. What do you enjoy about it?

I work as a Salesforce Consultant. So far my role has focused mainly on supporting existing clients with Admin related work, such as building Flows, building upon existing Salesforce functionality and providing end user support. In my time here, I’ve really enjoyed working in a team. In my prior role I was a Solo Admin, so I had to do everything on my own without a support mechanism around me.

Do you have plans to take any Salesforce certifications in the near future?

I’m always open to growing in what I do. Currently I’m working towards passing the Nonprofit Cloud Consultant certification, that’s my priority this year. There are other certifications I’m interested in including Slack Admin, both of the recently announced certifications, Design Strategist and Business Analyst and the Process Automation partner credential.

You have a busy few months ahead, travelling and speaking at various Salesforce events. Can you tell us more?

Over the course of May and June I will be speaking at Czech Dreamin’, London’s Calling, YeurDreamin’, and Salesforce World Tour London. The topics I am covering include skills for Salesforce Admins, personal branding and Flow. Over the next 5 weeks I’ll be back and forth to London and over to Prague and Amsterdam for these events. I’m also in the middle of co-founding a community conference about Process Automation.

At Cloud Galacticos, we’re a remote work focused company, what advice would you give people to make the most of working remotely and staying motivated?

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to actually take some time to get away from your desk. I say this because our health and wellbeing is so important, especially when we live in a world now where it is so easy to be permanently attached to our desks. If our health and wellbeing is in a good place it will have a positive effect on our work.

Aside from Salesforce and working at Cloud Galacticos, what else do you enjoy doing?

We have a couple of pets living at home, Jet our cat and Jacks our dog. Jacks is a labsky (labrador and husky cross). He’s a little under two years old and is full of energy, so he gives us a lot to do.

I also spend time with my local church where I lead a Bible study group and support one of our services as the on-hand tech guy.

Priyanka Miryalkar, Mulesoft Lead Developer – Meet the Galacticos

Welcome to the latest in our series of Meet the Galacticos blogs to learn more about our growing Cloud Galacticos team. Say ‘hello’ to Priyanka Miryalkar, one of our few recent recruits. We caught up with Priyanka to ask her a few questions.

Priyanka Miryalkar, Mulesoft Lead Developer

Hi Priyanka, can you give us a bit of background about yourself and your work history?

I’m from an IT background  from a small town in India. After my education I moved to the city and after so many hurdles joined start-up companies and product based companies in my journey and learned a lot.

I have more than ten years of experience in the IT industry. I initially started my career as a tester, then moved to middleware technologies, scripting like Node.js, Mule4, Javascript, and queuing servers like activeMQ.

My relevant experience is six plus years of experience on integration platforms and worked with different companies on integration roles. My last role was with Hitachi Vantara India. I worked as Senior integration lead where I used to be a solo contributor from offshore on Mulesoft integration. It involved different projects with internal and external clients, including participated onshore go-lives with the salesforce development and admin team.

What’s your story behind joining the Cloud Galacticos team?

Priyanka Miryalkar, Cloud GalacticosI always wanted to have a learning experience in my career. Also to make sure any company I joined should have that learning curve and should also have that family time.

When I spoke to Phil and Paul, it felt good and they gave me that confidence to take on this role. I think Cloud Galacticos is a place where I can leverage my skills and also learn new things.

What is your role as a Mulesoft Lead Developer at Cloud Galacticos, and what do you enjoy about it?

  1. Responsible for programming and software development using various programming languages and related tools and frameworks, reviewing code written by other programmers, requirement gathering, bug fixing, testing, documenting and implementation.
  2.  Understand and implement Dataweave scripts. Deploy APIs to Cloudhub.
  3.  Mule applications developed to connect third parties APIs easily and quickly. Regardless of various technologies used by applications, Mule ESB enables easy integration of applications, enabling them to exchange data.
  4. Had enablement calls with Podpoint team and with MuleSoft team. Onboarded few resources and allocated stories together and worked on it.
  5. I enjoy working with multiple people because integration is all about engaging so many teams and demonstrating the applications.

Do you have plans to take any Salesforce certifications in the near future?

I have very good experience working with salesforce sales and services cloud from the past. So, I have already done my admin certification on salesforce. I’m also a Mule 4 certified developer. However, I am planning to do the Architect level certification on Mulesoft later this year. And if required I’ll look into more Salesforce certs.

Aside from Salesforce and working at Cloud Galacticos, what else do you enjoy doing?

I spend most of my days in front of a computer which isn’t the healthiest thing. I try to minimise screen time where possible. So I try to spend as much time with nature – gardening, or going for walks. I also enjoy reading books on human psychology, cooking, and just hanging out with family and friends. I really miss my large family back in India, I have long video calls with them almost everyday.

Anything else you want to add?

Priyanka Miryalkar LondonI celebrated my one year wedding anniversary in the UK, but I haven’t had the chance to explore many places.

I’m planning to go on vacation this summer – it’d be great to get few suggestions on budget-friendly places to visit in the UK!

Kully Dosanjh, Consultant – Meet the Galacticos

Welcome to the latest in our series of Meet the Galacticos blogs to learn more about our growing Cloud Galacticos team. Say ‘hello’ to Kully Dosanjh, one of our recent Consultant recruits. We caught up with Kully to ask her a few questions.

Kully Dosanjh, Consultant

Hi Kully, can you give us a bit of background about yourself and your work history?

My educational background is Information Systems related. I then got introduced to Salesforce at the start of 2015, where I worked for an Oil & Gas company in Dubai.  Since then I have worked for quite a few end users as well as being self employed as a contractor.

What’s your story behind joining the Cloud Galacticos team?

I was introduced to Cloud Galacticos through ‘Supermums’ who are a fabulous recruitment company where they find their candidates’ roles based on skills and expertise.

What’s it like joining a new company during these Covid times?

For me, the transition was great as I had worked at home pre-Covid so was well accustomed to the new ways of working which many had to learn to adapt to.

What is your role as a Consultant at Cloud Galacticos involve, and what do you enjoy about it?

Since joining CG I was put on a project with an end user where I’ve been tasked to capture and create all ‘as-is business processes.  I must say I have really enjoyed my role so far,  I’ve had exposure to all sides of the business to really understand what their requirements are, and have regular communication with stakeholders at all levels within the organisation. From here I am looking forward to helping them review and improve these processes and implement their new changes in Salesforce.

Do you have plans to take any Salesforce certifications in the near future?

Absolutely, I would really be interested in the Not for Profit and Sales Cloud Certifications.

Cloud Galacticos is a remote working focussed company. What advice would you give people to make the most of working remotely and staying motivated?

Definitely set times when you are working. Often working from home you actually end up doing more work than you would in an office environment.  Make sure to still take time out for lunch or even a quick walk or chat with someone.

Aside from Salesforce and working at Cloud Galacticos, what else do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy travelling and exploring new places as well as going for a regular run, it helps clear my mind (not so much since being back in England and the cold weather!)

Favourites:

Food: I love Thai food, anything spicy does the job!

Drink: Coffee, Gin and Wine

Why Company Culture Matter

By Phil Walton

I have been lucky to work in some pretty awful jobs..!

Some interesting jobs…

Some unusual jobs…

Lucky, because I have survived them, moved on from them, and learned from them.

The Tough Lessons

At 18 I left home, I worked in the fields of Norfolk, England, picking fruit, grading veg, and packing trucks. It was physically tough, but I worked with people I liked, in the fresh air and the sun.

Also, I once took a job in Canada – often working 100 hour weeks – for minimal wages. But I did it for a friend, and had great fun travelling. i.e. the culture was right.

For my first entrepreneurial business, I converted an old Mill into 20 arts and music studios in Manchester, England. I did my 8 hour day at my paid job, then travelled 30 minutes to work evenings and weekends labouring – as I had no cash to pay someone else to do it…

What’s my point?

Sometimes we don’t get to choose what job we do.

When you need some income you take whatever job you can get. But thankfully many of us in this Salesforce Community are in a better position. We are building skills and experience, in a growing and in-demand marketplace. So we can be more choosy about where we work, who we work for, and what they stand for.

Let’s be honest here, we often work in sandboxes but this isn’t always playtime. We still do challenging jobs, sometimes have to caffeine our way through tough tasks and handhold clients though long go-live events. But there is (hopefully) a big difference between doing this in a safe and friendly environment, where your colleagues appreciate your hard work and celebrate your successes – rather than somewhere you feel undervalued and unloved.

What do Cloud Galacticos stand for?

A couple of years back we got together and did an exercise, where everyone listed characteristics of Cloud Galacticos, and the characteristics they wanted to avoid. We then looked at similarities and trends, and found a set of beliefs/values/ideals that seemed core to us all. With a bit of clever organising we summarised it as :

“H-E-R-O-E-S”

Honesty

Expertise

Respectfulness

Ownership

Enjoyment

Cloud Galacticos 2021 Highlights

Welcome to our Cloud Galacticos 2021 team highlights blog

Even though it’s been an eventful year for many reasons, at Cloud Galacticos we had plenty to be grateful for. From getting married to passing certs, and climbing mountains, to finally getting to meet each other in-person.

Here are some of the Cloud Galacticos team’s 2021 highlights.

Pippa Cox, Project Manager

Pippa Cox Art

I think my work highlight for 2021 has to be finally meeting some of my colleagues face-to-face after spending a year building relationships and working on zoom. I am looking forward to more opportunities to meet up in 2022.

On a personal level I have enjoyed the time to start being creative again and trying new crafts like embroidery pieces. Although the majority of my creativity has probably been spent decorating and gardening.

Vetri Manoharan, Developer

Vetri

The best thing happened to me in 2021 is joining the Cloud Galacticos team. I am so grateful to Phil for providing me this opportunity. Before joining the company, my career was more leaning towards project and team management. It’s almost 8 months now and the journey is still very exciting. I got to chance work on LWC (which I never learnt or got chance to work on before), worked on multiple projects, and so happy to be back on the development side of things.

On the personal front, I really feel that I am able to manage work-life balance (work from home really affected me big time), able to spend time with family, reading books, meditating, being mindful with the thoughts. Also I got engaged and going to get married in 2022. Looking forward to an exciting journey the next year hopefully!

Kully Dosanjh, Business Analyst

I think my highlights for 2021 would be joining the wonderful Cloud Galacticos team, I have already learnt lots and have lots more to learn from such amazingly experienced people.

Amazingly, outside of work my main highlight for 2021 has to be ‘climbing Ben Nevis’ with 2 kids in tow! This was by far the most challenging undertaking of all time for me. I had to have many pep talks with my poor legs to keep me motivated to finish.

I’m glad to say I smashed it and reached the summit!

Mark Jones, Salesforce Consultant

Mark Jones's User Experience Designer Cert

It’s been a really big year for me in the Salesforce ecosystem, to say the least, so it’s hard for me to pick out just one highlight.

Over the course of this year I’ve become a 5x Ranger on Trailhead, earned three different Salesforce certifications and spoke at a number of community events spanning four different countries (all done virtually).

To top it off, I became a Salesforce Consultant working with the team here at Cloud Galacticos. This has been a great year. Here’s to a good 2022!

Luke Menzfeld, Salesforce Consultant

Luke Menzfeld's wedding

This year has certainly been a year to remember. It marked my first full working year at Cloud Galacticos after joining in October of 2020. I’ve had lots of great opportunities to tackle interesting business challenges and learned a lot through my practical experiences.

Meeting the majority of the Galacticos team in London recently was my biggest professional highlight. I’ve developed virtual friends and colleagues throughout 2021, but to get together face to face was great.

On a personal note, I also have a number of highlights. Firstly, my wife and I got married in June with an intimate mix of family and friends. We made the best of it despite the Covid restrictions.

In July we moved house, and to top it all off we found out in September that our family would be growing in size in 2022! Overall a great year.

James MacRae, Salesforce Consultant – Meet the Galacticos

Welcome to the latest in our series of Meet the Galacticos blogs to learn more about our growing Cloud Galacticos team. Say ‘hello’ to James MacRae, one of our recent Salesforce Consultants. We caught up with James to ask him a few questions.

James MacRae, Salesforce Consultant

Hi James, can you give us a bit of background about yourself and your work history?

I got involved in Salesforce back in 2007 while working on an integration project at a media end user as a data migration analyst. I have worked at several end users as well and also as a contractor.

What’s your story behind joining the Cloud Galacticos team?

I reached out to the team over Linkedin and had initial conversation with Phil. Once I had met the wider team I really liked the approach they took towards the people side of the the business for both employees and clients. It felt this was a company that I’d like to work for.

What’s it like joining a new company during these Covid times?

Not easy. I think people have found starting new jobs in Covid times tricky, however Covid made me re-evaluate my career goals. I had never considered working at a consultancy, but thought it would be the best move to further my experience with the Salesforce platform. Hence the decision to move to Cloud Galacticos.

What is your role as a Salesforce Consultant at Cloud Galacticos involve, and what do you enjoy about it?

Since joining I have been working with a couple of Not for Profit organisations as a hybrid Salesforce Admin/Business Analyst.  I enjoy the variety that the role brings – the reward of delivering technical solutions as well as the people element of the role, and working with end users to understand what their requirements are.

Do you have plans to take any Salesforce certifications in the near future?

Definitely. Next on my list is the Salesforce Not For Profit certification and hopefully the Service Cloud cert after that.

Cloud Galacticos is a remote working focussed company. What advice would you give people to make the most of working remotely and staying motivated?

I think working remotely, it’s easier to work longer hours than you might in a non-remote environment.  Having a separate space where you can work in your home helps.  Keeping in touch and having conversations during the day is also important. An activity to do in your lunch break can really help and boost motivation too; if its a walk or a cycle or anything similar.

Aside from Salesforce and working at Cloud Galacticos, what else do you enjoy doing?

I like my tennis. I try and play two to three times a week. By having a desk job I really appreciate getting outside and doing something active – even took my hand to gardening and DIY (not particularly successfully) during the pandemic.

Favourites:

Food: Anything except mushrooms 🙂

Drink: An americano in the morning

Music: Anything on the radio really. Absolute 80s, 90s and 00’s are the radio stations I tune into.

Animal: I’m going to go with Hedgehogs because I saw one for the first time recently.

Place to Visit: Sagres in Portugal

How Can You Give Back to the Trailblazer Community

At Cloud Galacticos we are a growing team of Salesforce geeks and are big fans of the Trailblazer Community. So we’re glad that one of our latest recruits, Mark Jones, fully believes in this ethos. He’s already an active member within the Salesforce community. He’s one of the co-leaders of the Salesforce Newcastle User Group, along with Luke Menzfeld (another of our Salesforce consultants). And he’s even got his own Medium blog page – Ragamuffin Admin. It has articles covering his thoughts and opinions on a variety of Salesforce topics.

We thought we’d give you a taster of his latest blog ‘How can you give back to the Trailblazer Community’…

How Can You Give Back to the Trailblazer Community

Mark Jones Salesforce Community Blog1

When I first started working in a role that used the Salesforce Platform for its chosen CRM system I honestly had no idea the Salesforce Community was even a thing. Fast forward to five and a half years later – I find myself as someone who is quite heavily involved in the community in a number of ways.

In this post, I will highlight some of the ways that you (yes, you) can get involved in the community. This is not by any means an exhaustive list. Rather, this list are areas where I am actually involved in the community, so I feel I can speak on these relatively well. I want to share this list to hopefully act as an encouragement to those in the ecosystem, as well as possibly acting as a bit of a signpost for those who are a bit newer and are trying to figure out their place in the Salesforce Ohana.

Here are my four ways you can get involved in the community.

1. Get Involved in the Trailblazer Community

The Trailblazer Community is most certainly the primary way you can give back to the community. There is always a need for Trailblazers to come and give back. Whether it be through leading a Community Group, speaking at a Community Event or Conference or be it through simply just attending events held throughout the community and being there to be a supporting presence. There is always going to be something you can help with in the community.

At the time of writing, I’ve had the pleasure of doing a number of different things within the community this year. This includes speaking at three different Community Group events (not including ones ran by the group I co-lead), speaking at two different Community Conferences, and participating in two sets of event series’ covering a couple of different topics.

I’m just a guy from a small town in the North East of England, there’s nothing all too special about me. So if I can do all of this, then you certainly can do it too.

2. Take Part in a Salesforce.org Community Sprint

Mark Jones Salesforce Community Blog3

Honestly, the Salesforce.org Open Source Commons Virtual Community Sprints are one of my favourite things to do in the Salesforce Ohana.

If you’re in the Nonprofit space and have worked with some of the additional NPSP Modules such as Programme Management and Outbound Funds what you might not know is that those were built through previous Sprints. They are routinely worked on and enhanced at the Virtual Community Sprints.

I’ve had the opportunity to meet a number of great people through the Sprints. I’ve also got to know people through Salesforce.org #CoffeeChat, and EMEA AMA’s a bit better. Plus people I met when I spoke at Nonprofit Dreamin’.

3. Become a Mentor to Somebody

Mentorship is a really great way in which you can give back to the community. If you’ve got the time to offer to help someone, you might just help someone to find their next job.

4. Go to Mark’s Medium page…

Want to know Mark’s fourth and final tip? Why not go to his Medium blog page to read the full article? And don’t forget to give him a follow!

Vetri Manoharan, Salesforce Developer – Meet the Galacticos

Welcome to the latest in our series of Meet the Galacticos blogs to learn more about our growing Cloud Galacticos team. Say ‘hello’ to Vetri, a Salesforce developer. We caught up with Vetri via Slack to ask him a few questions.

Vetri Manoharan, Salesforce Developer

Hi Vetri, can you give us a bit of background about yourself and your work history?

I started my career as a .net web developer.  I got a chance to work on Salesforce around ten months into my career. Working on Salesforce is awesome because of the configuration and low-code methodology. On my first deployment I didn’t know that we needed to write a unit test class – I was the only person with Salesforce experience…!  So I started learning things on my own.

My major career breakthrough in Salesforce was when I started working with Phil while I was at Dazeworks. I have worked with Phil and his team for almost 5 years before joining full-time with Cloud Galacticos. I recently got involved on various projects on Salesforce Field Service and CPQ – hoping to do my CPQ certification soon.

What’s your story behind joining the Cloud Galacticos team?

I started working with Phil in 2015, I was part of various complex projects, even travelled to the UK for a project delivery. I always like the way things are handled at Cloud Galacticos and approached Phil around the start of 2021 to convey that I would like to join the team! My career recently was more into project management and leading the team, but I wanted to be on the development side of things. Also I wanted to be part of a team where I can learn and do things differently.

One of the main benefits with working at Cloud Galacticos is the remote working culture. This allows me to spend more time with my parents.

Vetri with Paul and Neel at India Dreaming

Vetri with Paul and Neel at India Dreaming

What is your role as a Salesforce Developer at Cloud Galacticos involve, and what do you enjoy about it?

My role here is more into Salesforce development – I really like to code! I’m also involved in projects writing APEX cods and have been part of the sprint planning and retrospectives in the projects.

Aside from Salesforce and working at Cloud Galacticos, what else do you enjoy doing?

I like to do yoga and meditation which I try and find time to do each day. Sport-wise, I like watching and playing cricket, and I enjoy trekking in the Himalayan mountains. If time allows, I would like to learn to play some musical instruments too 🙂

Cloud Galacticos is a remote working focussed company. What advice would you give people to make the most of working remotely and staying motivated?

I would say, don’t sit for hours, make sure you get up every hour and stretch yourself. Also, the pandemic has changed a lot of things, so spend time with your family and friends.
