Ben Duong, Marketing Manager – Meet The Galacticos

Continuing in our series in which you get to meet and learn more about the Cloud Galacticos team, say ‘hello’ to me, Ben Duong, Marketing Manager at Cloud Galacticos. Read on to find out more about me and my experiences.

Ben Duong, Marketing Manager

Can you give us a bit of background about yourself and your history with Salesforce?

My background is pure marketing. I did a Business and Marketing degree, then a Chartered Institute of Marketing Postgrad. I then worked in account management at various marketing agencies in London before moving to Sheffield to go freelance.

I met Phil at university, and when he approached me about helping him with some marketing back in 2013, I thought ‘why not’? The rest, as they say, is history.

You’ve worked on a lot of marketing projects at Cloud Galacticos through the years, can you tell us about some of your favourite or memorable ones?

I’ve been working with Phil on his marketing since he started his journey as a Salesforce consultancy. It was great to see his business grow – employing more people, gaining MVP status and the respect of the Salesforce community.

Deciding to rebrand as Cloud Galacticos was a big project as it meant levelling up the business. We were now competing with more established and larger companies. I think our sponsorship at the Salesforce World Tour London is one of my highlights. It’s our biggest project of the year, and normally the most rewarding for myself and the team.

Looks like you’ve done a lot of travelling and have been to a few Salesforce events around the world, can you some of your highlights?

I’ve been very fortunate to have been to so many Salesforce related events around the world with my job. From Paris to New York, Amsterdam to San Francisco, it highlights that Salesforce is truly a global business, as well as community.

In terms of favourite, Dreamforce stands heads and shoulders above them all. Words can’t describe the vastness of the 4-day conference. It’s also convenient that my dad and family live in San Francisco. So best of both worlds.

Aside from working as the Marketing Manager at Cloud Galacticos, what else do you enjoy doing?

With Covid-19 affecting our lives at the moment, I’ve taken to doing regular lunch time walks and yoga to help stay focused and healthy. I also enjoy with cooking and trying to make new dishes from scratch at home. Plus, going to my weekly local pub quiz helps keep the old brain cells in check!

What tips would you have in working with clients remotely, or working remotely in general?

Before Covid-19, I was part working from home and part working from a co-working space in Sheffield called Kollider. So I’m used to being flexible with my working environment.

I’d say it helps to have a dedicated space to work from. Somewhere you feel comfortable and focused. Having regular online casual / non-work catch ups with your team helps too. Also, don’t forget to take regular breaks to get some fresh air!

Team Galacticos Salesforce Event Highlights

Anyone in the Salesforce ecosystem will know, we’re one big ohana. And before the Covid-19 situation affected us all, events and conferences were a big part of what we do (from local user groups and community Dreamin’ events, to large scale World Tours and of course, Dreamforce).

With all Salesforce events for 2020 now being re-imagined, some of the team members at Cloud Galacticos tell us their event highlights from previous years.

Neel Meghani CTO – India Dreamin 2018

Neel at India Dreamin

“My second time attending India Dreamin was back in December 2018. Representing Cloud Galacticos was Phil Walton (CEO) and our new (at the time) COO Paul Battisson, along with myself. This was also a very memorable event for me as it was the first time speaking at such an event.

From my experience of Salesforce related events, India Dreamin stands out above and beyond all others. There seems to be much more passion for learning about the platform. The entire two days had the feel of something special happening and that the Salesforce community should take notice!”

Paul Battisson, COO – Dreamforce 2014

Paul presenting at Dreamforce

“This was my second Dreamforce, so I had learned a few of the newbie lessons from my first Dreamforce and was much better prepared for the craziness. The reason this is my favourite Dreamforce is that I did my favourite ever talk for the first time – ‘Building Machine Learning Systems With Apex’ with my then colleague Jen Wyher.

Why is this my favourite talk? Firstly, it took a tremendous amount of effort to get the system working. Secondly, this means Jen and I hold the record for being the first people to discuss doing AI/Machine Learning on Salesforce, years before Einstein. We got such great feedback from the talk. It started so many conversations with people that changed how I spent the rest of the event.”

Phil Walton, CEO – Punta Dreamin’, Uruguay 2018

Phil at Punta Dreamin

“Salesforce events have taken me around the world! I am proud to say I have spoken at events on five continents, and Punta Dreamin was a great excuse to travel to a whole new continent for me. I had never been to South America, so my trip to Uruguay – via a few days in Buenos Aires, Argentina – was an amazing trip.

Great food, great wine, and Aldo was a great host. Also I was training for the Manchester marathon at the time, so I running in the heat of Buenos Aires and Punta was amazing. I always say running is a great way to see the sights of a new city.

I look back on international trips like Uruguay, India, Morocco, USA, and around Europe with fond memories. Hopefully they will be back soon and we’ll meet again!”

Val Southern, Senior Consultant – Salesforce World Tour London 2019

Val at World Tour London

“At Cloud Galacticos, we work remotely so it’s always good when the team gets a chance to meet up at Salesforce events. And for me, one of my annual highlights has been the Salesforce World Tour London in May.

Last year’s conference was great. We held our first ‘Client and Partner Drinks Reception’ the night before. It was at a fabulous rooftop bar near Salesforce’s London office. As one of the  sponsors of the conference, we had a stand which meant our day started at 7am, and didn’t finish till 6pm. But as usual, the day flew by, especially as we had a special guest keeping us company at the stand in the way of Paul Sturgess, Britain’s Tallest Man!

It’s a shame that the event couldn’t happen this year, but fingers crossed for 2021!”

Nkosi Ncube, Developer – Mulesoft Connect 2019

Nkosi Ncube at MuleSoft CONNECT 2019

“I have been to a few Salesforce events, the most notable ones being the Salesforce World Tour. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 most events were not to be this year.

However, I did manage to attend the Mulesoft Connect event in London in October 2019. The main highlight was actually finally meeting a fellow Galacticos, Mike Gill. And of course I can’t forget the swag (very important at events!).

We hope and pray these events will be back soon!”

Salesforce World Tour 2019 – Another One Bites The Dust!

Cloud Galacticos at Salesforce London World Tour with paul Sturgess

It has been 2 weeks since it felt like the world turned up at the Salesforce World Tour at the ExCel centre in London. I have been going to this event since 2012 and every year it gets bigger and bigger.

This year we were proud to once again be Gold sponsors and get to meet up with so many of our existing customers and meet the rest of the Salesforce community to see what they were up to. This was my first World Tour as a Galactico and the first time in about 18 months I had been at such a busy booth all day. I have never been so happy to sit down after 12 hours straight stood up.

The fun for the Galacticos team actually started the night before when we hosted an event for some of our customers, partners and friends at a rooftop bar venue in central London. This allowed us to have a catch up over some drinks and tasty canapes before the big day when everything gets a bit crazy. We had a great night, David the magician left me scratching my head and questioning myself for the next few days (how did he do it??), and I enjoyed getting to meet a few people face to face that I had only spoken to on the phone previously.

So, that’s it then, another year done and dusted? Well apart from following up on all the great conversations we had with everyone at the Partner Forum, our drinks event and the World Tour, we are also looking forward to seeing launching a new website in the coming months and seeing how we can continue to expand our ever growing team with some of the fantastic people we met on the day who said they wanted to be a Galactico. So whilst the day may be done, the fun really starts now. Plus I still need to figure out how that magician made that card appear in the envelope!

Thank you again to everyone who came and spoke to myself or any of the team over the Partner Forum, our event or at the World Tour; meeting people and hearing what they are doing is truly my favourite part of these events. If you didn’t manage to speak to us but wanted to, please contact us below and I look forward to catching up!
